Iringa’s economy is dependent on agriculture (crop and livestock), lumber production and tourism.
Agriculture: Almost 40% of the population in the municipality depends on agriculture and livestock. Both food and cash crops are grown. Maize is the major staple food and is widely cultivated. Other crops grown include:
- Cabbages
- Irish potatoes
- Sweet potatoes
- Groundnuts
- Peas
- Beans
- Fruits and vegetables
Cash crops cultivated in the region include:
- Tobacco
- Pyrethrum
- Tea
- Sunflower
- Coffee
- Onions
Livestock farming (also known as animal husbandry) is another agricultural-based economic activity in the municipality. Cattle, goat sheep are the most common animals raised.
Lumber Production: Iringa region is famous for its lumber production in Tanzania. There is large commercial forest plantation in the Mufindi and Kilolo districts. These plantations are both public and privately owned. Sao Hill plantation in Mufindi is the largest of 18 publically-owned plantations in Tanzania.
Tourism: Iringa is one of the many tourist hubs in Tanzania, offering a range of tourist attractions. There are various National Parks and Game Reserves such as:
- Ruaha National Park
- Udzungwa Mountains National Park
There are also several important historical sites such as:
- Isimila Stone Age site
- Iringa Boma site
- Mkwawa Skull Museum.
